The Benefits of Gas Fireplace Inserts

So, you've heard all about the advantages of gas fireplaces over wood-burning fireplaces: they're cleaner, they're safer, they're easier, and they look just as good. Now, you'd like to have one for yourself. The only trouble is, you already have a fireplace. Do you have to simply live with what you have? Do you have to remove your existing fireplace and install a gas one in its place? No. There is a much simpler and less expensive solution. All you need is a gas fireplace insert.

Gas fireplace inserts, as the name suggests, are inserted inside an existing fireplace to convert it to a gas-burning fireplace. The inserts can be installed in a traditional masonry unit or a prefabricated factory unit. They come with either a thermostat or a remote control. These inserts can cost as little as a couple hundred dollars or as much as several thousand dollars.

Gas fireplace inserts make decorating easy. They offer many options for the surrounding area. Some come with brick or tile. Others come with an empty frame in which you can add tiles. These tiles do not have to be grouted or permanently affixed--they simply slide in place. This makes it easy to change the entire look of your fireplace to match any d├ęcor.

Another advantage to gas fireplaces is their energy efficiency. A little known fact about wood-burning fireplaces is that they are a source of heat loss--they literally suck the hot air out of a room. Gas fireplaces, on the other hand, are energy and cost efficient. If you are planning to use your fireplace as a heating unit, you will need to buy inserts with a metal grille. Some units are available in which the grille is hidden or decorated. If, however, your fireplace is merely decorative, you do not need the grille at all.

Why Is It Necessary to Carry Out a Fireplace Repair?

Maintaining and repairing a fireplace is absolutely necessary. Winter months can be quite harsh and traumatic especially if you have a dysfunctional fireplace. Hence carrying out a fireplace repair at periodic intervals is absolutely essential. When fireplaces are not well maintained, they could expose your home to quite a lot of danger. Hence, it is in your interests as well as the interest of your family to keep the fireplace in a good condition.

Fix the Chimney
The chimney vents could have some problem or there could be a problem with masonry and both these issues cannot be neglected. They have to be addressed immediately in order to avoid any mishaps. Neglecting these areas could prove to be detrimental. If there are problems with the chimney caps or flues, they can be fixed quite easily. Even the masonry work as well as the drafting can be done quickly without too much hassle. But complex issues will require intense efforts and would also involve a lot of expense as well. But all of this would be worthwhile when compared to replacing the entire fireplace.

Timely Repairs
By carrying out a fireplace repair on time, you can prevent the damages from worsening and you can avoid a replacement. You should hire the services of a professional and ensure that they have the expertise to carry out the job. When they have the latest technologies and the required tools, the repairs can be carried out quite effortlessly and effectively.

Fixing Water Leakage
Problems with masonry and water leakages are important aspects and will have to be attended to immediately. When you hire professionals, you can be rest assured that they have the expertise and the know-how to carry out the job to perfection. Water leakages should be fixed without delay. The water should drain out easily and reach the rafters as well as the dry board. If there is seepage, then it might result in mold and mildew which can cause serious health problems. Breathing in mold spores could have adverse effects on your health and lead to severe ailments in future. Hence, it is absolutely essential that you get these issues sorted out as soon as you notice them.

Get Experienced Professionals
You must ensure that you get experienced professionals to do the fireplace repair. This is one way of ensuring that their work is guaranteed. Before entrusting the job, you must also ensure that the company has enough experience in this field as this is a specialized job. Check out their previous work record as well as their professionalism. Also check the reputation of the company and preferably get some references from friends and family before deciding on the right person to do the job.

How to Install a Gas Central Heating System

If you are just moving into your home or just beginning a renovation, you may want to install a new gas central heating system. Installing a gas central heating system can be mildly complicated, but it is definitely a job that you can do yourself if you take the time to figure out what you are doing. Below are the steps you will need to take to complete this project. With a little patience and attention to detail you will be well on your way to installing your new gas central heating system.

Step 1: Map out Your Duct Work and Install

Before you begin installing the actual duct work, it is extremely important to plan out your duct configuration in order to make sure that there is enough room in the walls, floors and ceilings to run your duct work and that there is enough space in each room of your house to connect the heating system. After you have mapped out the entire network of duct work, install the ducts piece by piece, ensuring that they reach every room where you want heat distributed.

Step 2: Install Air Handler

The first thing that you will actually have to install will be the air handler, which will come in your central heating unit installation kit. This component is usually installed in the basement of your home, set off several feet from any concrete walls. When installing this component, make sure that the condenser drain is installed in such a way that it will be able to drain away safely.
Step 3: Run Tubing Outside

Next, you will need to run tubing from the air handler itself to vent outside of your house somewhere above the foundation of your home.

Step 4: Turn off Power

Next, you will need to turn off the main power to your home. Since you will be working with and around electrical wiring, it will be incredibly important from a safety standpoint to ensure that the electricity is turned off completely.

Step 5: Install the Thermostat

Follow the directions on your thermostat to install it into a location on the wall of your home. Drill through the wall and attach the thermostat with screws and connect it to the main wiring of your home.
